Promises Kept

My dad and I ne'er overlapped,
 Senior, junior,
 He in scholar's mantle wrapped,
 I, mindless and asleep.

 Mom and me were seamless, one,
 Mother and son,
 She love's keeper, never done,
 Shepherd and her sheep.

 When we were all, just you and me,
so young and fine,
We made vows, me and thee,
 made them all to keep.

And as we grew in strength together,
And you were mine,
We thought that we would last forever,
And never cry nor weep.

And now? You, Mom, Dad—all gone,
All gone, all done;
No brand-new day for you will dawn;
Oh, how the time does creep!

Yet the new day shines as ever,
Glimmer, shimmer,
As if the day that died had never
Been scythed or sown or reaped.

So I face this day alone,
Surviving all;
And hope for better times to come,
And promises to keep.
