Our Hungate Lineage

Descendants of Francis Hungate

Generation 1

1. FRANCIS HUNGATE was born Abt. 1611 in England, and died 1645 in Chester. He married JOAN MIDDLETON. She was born Abt. 1619 in Leighton Hall, Lancashire, England, and died January 07, 1697/98.
Notes for FRANCIS HUNGATE:
According to Mormon records, "slain at Chester."
The Hungate family originated in the City of York, England. (See "Drake's Erboracum") In some old maps it is written Hundgate. During the Danish Conquest and occupation of NorthumberIand, the City of York was their capital. All the streets are called gates. There is one short and narrow street called Hungate. It goes down to the river Foss from St. Saviours Gate and it is near the site of an ancient dock where it is thought the Royal Kennel was located and that the dogs were used in hunting in the forest of Galpes, then adjoining the City.
The Danish word for dog is hund. Hence, the narrow street leading down to the river was called Hund Gate, corrupted to Hungate. Afterwards, this street became a commercial center and merchants lived near it. The family of Hungate, doubtless, took its name from this street.

Notes for CHARLES HUNGATE:
There is some question about the 1669 birthdate for Charles. According to Connie Martin, it's likely he was considerably younger than that. He and wife Anne were believed to have arrived in the U. S. on the ship Susannah in 1727. There is a conflict here with LDS sources which lists their marriage as occuring in Virginia, and all of their children's births in Virginia before 1727. However, the birthdates of the first four children, Charles, John, Mary and William conflict as well.

Children of CHARLES HUNGATE and ANNE ? are:
i. CHARLES HUNGATE, b. Abt. 1717.

Children of WILLIAM HUNGATE and NANCY? are:
i. WILLIAM HUNGATE, b. 1744, Blacksburg, Montgomery, VA; d. 1822, Floyd Co., Virginia.
Notes for WILLIAM HUNGATE:
Kidnapped by the Shawnee and taken across the Ohio River. He escaped, swam back across the river and eventually made it home. The Shawnee came again and took Nancy and the two girls. William and Mr. Eason were away; Charles, John and Mary were playing in an orchard away from the house. Nancy escaped within a couple of days and returned home.

A Dr. Hough or Huff, who had lived with the Shawnee for several years, was enlisted to try to negotiate the girls' return, but he was unsuccessful. Years later, when peace was finally made with the Shawnee, and several hundred captives were released, the girls were not among them. the family never learned of their fate. Eson's will made provision for these two daughters "in captivity," in case they should ever return.

Charles, John, their wives and families, their mother, sister Mary and Dr. Hough (Mary married him either in Virginia or Kentucky) moved west to Mercer County, KY, near Harrodsburg in 1786. It was said that their mother continued to leave food out for the little girls, in case they came home, for the rest of her days.

Area they lived in was originally part of Augusta County, then Botetourt, now Montgomery County, VA. The above are listed in the DAR books.

February 1, 1816, he married Annie De Pauw, a sister of Gen. John De Pauw, appropriate mention of whom is made elsewhere in this volume, and in 1819, together with his family, emigrated to Washington County, Ind., and engaged in clearing and farming. He became an active and influential member of the community, and in 1852 was appointed by Gov. Wright to the Associate Judgeship of Washington County. His first wife dying in 1842, Mr. Hungate selected Fannie Coffin for his second wife, and this lady yet survives him. He died November 21, 1855, a member of long standing in the Missionary Baptist Church. The family born to Jehu and Annie (Depauw) Hungate is as follows: Jackson P., born November 6, 1816, died in 1872; Jesse J.; John D. 8. PLEASANT HUNGATE was born 1809 in Mercer County, KY, and died April 20, 1869 in Daviess City, KY. He married ROSE ANN GRAY May 13, 1834 in Washington, KY. She was born 1817 in KY or MD, and died April 01, 1874 in Union County, KY.
Notes for PLEASANT HUNGATE:
In 1860, the Hungates were living in the Nevada Precinct, near the Boyle/Mercer County line. The battle of Perryville was fought October 8, 1862, and involved roughly 16,000 Confederate and 58,000 Union troops, with several thousand casualties altogether. One house belonging to a Bottom was right at the heart of things, and is still standing today in Perryville Battlefield Park. Several other residences belonging to people named Bottom were encompassed by the battlefield. It is probable these were relatives of Margaret Bottom Hungate and family. The removal to Daviess County by Pleasant, his wife and family, and Wm. E. O., and his wife may have been precipitated by the battle and its aftermath. The land around there was probably badly spoiled, in more ways than one.
