Dr. Leon Snyder was director of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum from its founding in 1958 until 1976. He was also head of the Department of Horticultural Science at the University of Minnesota from 1953 to 1970. The Leon C. Snyder Education and Research Building on campus was named for him. He was responsible for raising over a million dollars for the building from local garden clubs, and was deeply involved in the acquisition of one hundred acres of land for the site. He was further instrumental in expanding that acreage to the current 630.
The library in the building was named in honor of the then Governor of Minnesota, Elmer L. Andersen, a close friend of Leon and Vera Snyder.
"The arboretum he helped found and then nurtured for almost 20 years is his most visible accomplishment, but he also led garden tours around the world, wrote 5 books on gardening and solved listener's gardening problems for 21 years on a WCCO-Radio talk show. After he retired, he designed gardens for clients other than the University, including the Grandview Lodge in Brainerd and the city of New Ulm. He also led 18 tours for gardeners and visited gardens as far away as Australia and Europe." -- St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch, Monday Aug. 10, 1987
